You have got to be one of a very few people that have had a double wild cat sighting!!

My sister and I saw one midafternoon just outside Corvallis city limits. It was walking in her neighbor’s front yard. When we stopped to watch it from the road, it loped off into a row of junipers about 20 feet long to take cover. As it did, a bobcat ran out the other end of that row and across the main highway we had just turned off of! Double sighting!!
The cougar was a big male, easily 5 feet long, with a tail as least that long. Guessing 100-120 lbs? Maybe a little more?
I remember seeing a photo in the Seattle Times taken from a game camera on the aptly named Tiger Mountain near Issaquah. It showed 7 or 8 mountain lions in 1 frame! Too many to be a family IMO, and all appeared to be adults. My only theory was a female in estrus with a lot of suitors!

Sadly, the governments of Alberta and BC have set a short hunting season for cougar. The population is big enough in both provinces to sustain a limited harvest, I’m told. We don’t like it, and don’t think it’s acceptable either.

There was a YouTube video about it. It broke my heart to see dogs chasing it up into a tree and then it was shot with bow and arrow. It didn’t have a chance

The owner of the video stated he and his friends hunted it for population control. I don’t think this is acceptable. It isn’t, in my opinion.

All the maps we use on our site are from the IUCN Red Data List, which is supposed to be the number one authority on conservation of wild species. However, we have noticed many of the species maps do not show more recent confirmed sightings. For an always-updated cougar range map have a look at https://www.cougarnet.org/confirmations/. We will now be adding a link to the Cougar Network map on our cougar page, so thank you for pointing it out!

Is seems miss leading in regards to cats being seen and killed east of the Mississippi River.

That fact sheet was written many years ago so we’ll have to dig up the reference for you. It might take a while to get to it so feel free to remind us via email at smallwildcats[at]gmail.com

Natives so respected the big cat that they refused to hunt it or protect livestock herds from its predations.”
